Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Fighters Party

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master the talented storyteller has kept viewers on edge with deep backstory, a wide array of personalities, and a exciting storyline including divine entities, evil spirits, and dark forces increasing in influence within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for Episode 3 of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Warrior Group Introduced

The third episode ended with a huge suspense moment and presented the first table of characters who will split off from the central cast to undertake their separate journey, distinct from the additional parties.

This warrior group includes the determined fighter (played by the voice actor), the agile character (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (the cast member), the cleric (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

With 13 cast members, it was clear from the outset that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

That’s why, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, intertwining the characters’ stories before branching into three smaller tables: Warriors, Schemers, and Questers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

Per the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for adventurers who enjoy a traditionally charged fight-heavy gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are few and far between.

Upon first impression, characters like the reluctant priest the cleric might seem unsuited, but the actions of the third episode show why these specific adventurers are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the group has a clear idea where to head next after a violent initial meeting with the antagonists.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose death kicked off the story’s plot—exploited the enemy for his selfish purposes, invading the secret base, striking the rogue, and stealing all the powerful objects to dispose of.

The antagonist then cleared his liabilities and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, above Dol-Makjar, with Teor’s brother pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Additionally, each character has a personal reason to depart Dol-Makjar:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and closest confidant, wants retribution.
  • Kattigan is familiar with the northern area and warns that it is a dangerous place.
  • The warrior and The cleric, having resisted his house’s orders to eliminate Teor and instead saved him, have no other options.
  • However, their reputation as important members in House Halovar could assist the group reach places they usually can’t.
  • Furthermore, Teor pledged a unbreakable promise to The savior for his deliverance and will now accompany him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are sought by the rulers that rule Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making staying in the city too risky:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and The cleric defied the powerful family and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This means them little choice but to journey toward Timmony in quest for Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

Based on episode three’s Cooldown, we find out that the Soldiers table will not appear in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight players to form the Seekers and Strategists groups.

Audiences can expect finding out which characters will be assigned to which table in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on next week.
