A Number of Injured as In-Flight Disturbance Hits A Delta Airlines Aircraft Landing at Sydney, Australia

Delta Airlines stated the plane experienced "brief turbulence" as it arrived at Sydney Airport.

A number of individuals were hurt when a Delta flight originating in Los Angeles to Sydney encountered turbulence this past Friday.

Flight DL41 "encountered brief turbulence" as it landed at the Sydney airport, an airline spokesperson informed. Four flight attendants were injured.

The New South Wales Ambulance Service reported they assessed five individuals, and transported three to hospital with minor injuries that such as pain in the back and head pain. The patients' ages were between their 30s to 70s.

It is the latest incident of commercial jets being hit by atmospheric disturbance, with researchers saying that climate change is a major factor.

On board were 245 people and fifteen staff members on the aircraft, the official added, clarifying that the plane touched down "safely and normally" at Sydney Airport at 06:48 local time on Friday.

Paramedics said they received a call just only 180 seconds ahead of the plane arrived, and emergency vehicles were standing by on the runway.

Why plane turbulence is growing increasingly prevalent - and more severe.

Last year, 25 people sustained injuries when a separate Delta aircraft, on a route from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, Netherlands, encountered "significant" turbulence just a couple of hours into the lengthy trip, and had to make an emergency landing.

In 2024, travelers and staff on a Singapore Airlines flight endured a terrifying short but intense of severe turbulence. A traveler lost their life and dozens were injured, as unbelted passengers were thrown from their seats and crashed back down.

In-flight turbulence is not uncommon during flights, and while occurrences of strong or severe turbulence appear to be increasing, they are still very rare.

Research indicates that there are around 5,000 incidents of significant in-flight disturbance each year, out of a total of in excess of 35 million flights that currently occur around the world.

Severe turbulence is defined as when the vertical motions of a plane experiencing rough air masses generate more than 1.5 times the force of gravity on your body - a strong enough force to propel you from your seat if you did not have on a safety belt.

As global warming modifies weather patterns, researchers alert that commercial aviation could become more turbulent: shifts in temperature and altered air currents in the higher altitudes are likely to heighten the occurrence and strength of severe turbulence.
